FAQ – Our Multi-State Class

Our most popular course is the one we call a “Multi-State” class. Our class sizes are generally small so we can tailor the information and course material to the states where you plan on applying for a permit. Generally our students are most interested in the Utah and/or Florida permits.

More Details About the Class Itself:
The class starts with the application paperwork, your fingerprints will be taken, then we’ll begin the course. Basically the class entails watching a PowerPoint presentation, learning how firearms work, a question and answer session, and general chat about firearms stuff. Please note that you will not be eligible for the class if you are a foreigner, felon, been dishonorably discharged from the armed forces, have been adjudicated mentally defective, are younger than 20 years old, are under arrest or currently charged with a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year, been found guilty of crimes of domestic violence, or have a recent alcohol related arrest, including DWI/DWAI. There is no exam.

There will be 2 licenses discussed.  You can obtain the Utah license, or both the Utah and Florida license (if eligible).  Either license is valid for concealed carry on your person throughout 30+ states (but not NY, NJ, or CT).  Both licenses are valid for concealed carry and you do not need to register or own any firearms to be licensed (that’s a NY thing).  These licenses will allow you to carry a firearm, regardless if you own it or not, provided that you’re legally allowed to possess it (i.e., it’s not stolen) and it’s a legal firearm in the state where you will be traveling.  The Utah license (for a New Yorker) is not valid in Florida so if you want to carry a handgun in Florida, you’ll need the Florida license.

To obtain the Utah license, you need to complete only the classroom portion. To obtain the Florida license, you need to complete the classroom portion and there’s an additional shooting component.  The classroom course is $150. The Utah license costs $63.25 payable to Utah. The Utah license is valid for 5 years, and costs $15 to renew.  Utah will accept cash, Mastercard, Visa, money order, or personal check provided your name and address is imprinted on the check.
The license is valid in these states:   http://publicsafety.utah.gov/bci/FAQother.html except it’s not recognized in Colorado, Florida, or Michigan (unless you’re a Utah resident).

The Florida license costs is valid for 7 years, and costs $112 to renew. These prices change occasionally (and have only gone down over the last 5 years). Florida will accept cash, money order, or personal check.  You’ll receive a notice in the mail when it’s time to renew and additional instruction is not required to renew either license. Both licenses are available only to US citizens or permanent resident aliens. NYS/NYC license required to participate in shooting requirement for the Florida license.

If you are interested in obtaining a firearms license in NY State or upgrading a premise/target license, it’s definitely to your benefit to obtain an out-of-state license, such as the Utah license or the Florida license (or both) as this shows that you’re already licensed to carry a concealed & loaded firearm on your person throughout 30+ states. Then, you should also take an NRA course as proof of firearms proficiency. We can chat about this more at the class if you’re interested in obtaining a NYS or NYC license. A license issued by any county in NY is valid throughout the state, but not in NYC.  New York State also offers free hunting courses, and there’s a benefit to those too.  We also teach many NRA courses as well as classes for licenses from other states (such as Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Virginia, Florida, Arizona, Pennsylvania, NJ FID, New York).

For the class, you need to bring:

  • Color passport photo – 2″ x 2″ (one for each state application, but they’re also good to have some spare around the house)
  • Photocopy of your NY driver license (one for each state application)
  • Payment for each license – $51 for Utah
  • Payment for the course – $150 for Utah  (plus optional $50 for Florida shooting component) (Unless already paid online)

The Florida shooting requirement will be waived for former military (need DD-214 showing honorable discharge), NYS DJCS 47-hour armed guard training certificate, NJ SORA, or active duty LE certificate showing your name, instructor’s name, instructor’s signature and certification number, or NRA certificate, but costs $25 for fingerprinting, paperwork processing, etc.
